From UX to Product: learnings from the first year
Last year I made a move from the comfortable familiarity of being a UXer to the exciting and turbulent waters of Product. While some new aspects of this work seem very natural and logical, there were a couple of surprising ones in there as well. I’ll share the surprising ones and my learnings for those who are contemplating a similar step, or are in the same place in their journey.
Taking active part in tech discussions
Before I started as a PO, I did not fully realize in how many technical discussions I will have to participate, and have either an opinion, or at least an understanding of what is going on and what impact it has on the product and my team. As a UXer I wasn’t the one to shy away from such meetings, but being responsible for the product requires a next level of involvement. Asking for a debriefing from the developers in 1-on-1s is my go-to method to get up to speed, as simply googling technical terms is rarely helpful: the explainers online often assume certain tech knowledge even when explaining the ‘101’ level. This brought me to the idea to write some tech explainer blog posts for the product people about what I learned — so let me know if there are topics you wanna read about.
